If you’ve ever wished a cozy life sim would give you total creative freedom without sacrificing progression systems, depth, and long-term goals, Starsand Island might be your next obsession. Currently in Early Access (as of February 11th), this farming and life sim already feels packed with content—and even more importantly, it feels like a game that’s being built with cozy gamers in mind.
From terraforming your own island paradise to dating NPCs, automating your farm, riding bikes with friends, and exploring magical ruins, Starsand Island is aiming high. And honestly… It’s already hitting a lot of those goals.
First Impressions – A Cozy Sandbox That Wants You to Play Your Way
Starsand Island doesn’t rush you. You’re dropped into a charming open world with a main town and your personal homestead area (Hopeland), and the game quickly makes it clear that this is about long-term progression and self-directed play.
You can spend hours just gathering resources, building structures piece by piece, and shaping your game exactly how you want. The building system is modular and surprisingly flexible—grid-based if you like precision, or free placement if you’re more of a “free-form” decorator. Terrain editing on Windflute Island lets you sculpt hills, dig lakes, place roads, and design gardens, which gives it a strong sandbox feel compared to more rigid farming sims.
Performance, Platforms & Release Plans
Starsand Island is currently playable in Early Access on Steam and Xbox, with full release planned for Summer 2026. At launch, it’s also expected to come to PS5 and Switch 2, with Mac (M1 series) support planned and no Linux version announced at this time.
You can play with mouse & keyboard or controller, and a dedicated Steam Deck version is in the works (currently marked as “playable”). From beta testing, performance on Steam Deck was already surprisingly solid, though building mode can feel a bit complex on a smaller screen—so improvements there will be very welcome.
In terms of content, this is the kind of game you can easily sink 100+ hours into, especially if you enjoy building, decorating, profession grinding, and collection systems.
Professions, Skills & Progression
Instead of locking you into one playstyle, Starsand Island encourages experimentation. There are five professions—crafting, farming, ranching, fishing, and exploration (combat)—and each one has skill trees that progress from beginner to expert tiers.
You’re not forced to max everything, but the game gently rewards you for branching out. Crafting is especially helpful early on, since advanced machines and tools make resource gathering way less grindy later.
This system makes long-term progression feel meaningful instead of repetitive, which is something a lot of cozy games struggle with once the “honeymoon phase” wears off.
Farming, Ranching & Automation

Farming in Starsand Island goes way beyond planting a few crops and calling it a day. You’ve got nearly 100 crop types, seasonal bonuses for planting the right things at the right time, and even special mechanics like planting in 3×3 grids for a chance at giant crops. Seasonal produce can be sold for profit or turned into themed furniture, which is a fun cozy touch.
There’s also a heavy emphasis on automation:
- Sprinklers
- Fertilizer boxes
- Farming robots
- A Greenhouse
- Everlasting seeds that never stop growing
If you love building systems that eventually “run themselves,” this game really leans into that fantasy.
Ranching is equally deep. You’ll unlock skills related to animal care, breeding, and resource production. There are over 10 animal species with dozens of variants, and each animal has its own needs—clean spaces, shelters, food, and interaction. It’s cozy, but it still asks you to be thoughtful about how you manage your land.
Exploration, Combat & the Moonlit Forest
Combat in Starsand Island is “optional”, which is a win for cozy game players who just want to build, decorate, and farm in peace. You can rely on robot companions to handle fights for you, or choose to engage using ranged weapons like slingshots, bows, and elemental arrows.
The Moonlit Forest is where things get a little more magical and mysterious. This hidden area is full of rare resources, mythical creatures, and ruins to explore. You’ll mine special ores, collect unique plants, and uncover secrets that feed back into your main island progression. There are also boss encounters you can tackle for powerful rewards—completely optional, but tempting if you like loot and rare companions.
NPCs, Romance & Cozy Social Features

The town is populated with 15 NPCs, including several romance options. Characters are voiced, which adds charm and personality, and relationships feel more meaningful than just gifting items every day.
Romanceable characters include:
Solara, Graminova, Zerine, Delphin, Pastelle, Zephyria, Serena, Youfang, Lunelle, Sylvain, Alex, and Aurelis
The social side of the game will expand even more with planned multiplayer, letting you visit other players’ islands, ride bikes together, and even play card games. For cozy multiplayer fans, this has huge potential for relaxed, low-pressure co-op play.
Fishing, Cooking & Festivals
Fishing is surprisingly nice, with 100+ fish species across freshwater, saltwater, and deep-sea regions. You can sell fish, farm them in ponds, or even display them in aquariums at home. There are also legendary fish tied to specific regions and seasons, which adds a nice collection-based challenge.
Cooking offers over 50 recipes, many of which provide buffs—like improving luck, helping with animals, or making mini-games easier.
Seasonal festivals like the Summer Beach Festival and Chinese New Year add flavor to the calendar and help the world feel alive beyond your farm loop.
Building, Decorating & Vehicles

This might be where Starsand Island shines the most. With:
- Over 300 furniture pieces
- Modular building
- Terrain shaping
- 9 unlockable subplots
- 3 different home environments
You can easily lose hours just decorating and redesigning your island. And if that’s not enough, you can travel around on bikes, skateboards, water mounts, air mounts, and even ride animal companions like alpacas, pigs, and ostriches. It’s ridiculous in the best way.
Early Access Thoughts
Even in Early Access, Starsand Island feels like a full game. There’s already a massive amount to do, and the roadmap to full-release includes:
- Multiplayer
- More NPC content
- Ongoing balance and performance improvements
- Future after full-release DLC with new regions and maps
The foundation is strong, and while there are definitely areas that will benefit from polish (especially UI and building controls on handheld devices), the direction of the game is promising.
Final Verdict – Is Starsand Island Worth Playing Now?
If you love cozy games with deep building systems, automation, long-term progression, and creative freedom, Starsand Island is absolutely worth checking out in Early Access. It already offers enough content to keep you busy for dozens—if not hundreds—of hours, and the planned updates suggest it’s only going to get better.
This isn’t just a “cute farming sim.” It’s a cozy sandbox RPG that lets you shape your world, your playstyle, and your pace. If the developers follow through on their roadmap, Starsand Island has real potential to become a standout title in the cozy game genre.
