At its current Early Access stage, the story is extremely light. There’s a very short introduction with little emotional weight, and the game quickly shifts its focus to building up your village and completing quests rather than telling a compelling narrative.
If you’re someone who plays cozy games primarily for story, this may feel underwhelming—for now.

NPCs & Villagers in Everdream Village
The NPCs in Everdream Village are cute and charming, and the art style fits the cozy aesthetic well. However, player character customization is very limited at the moment, which is disappointing—though the developers have confirmed this will be expanded before full release.
NPC diversity is also lacking, and while villagers provide plenty of quests, the dialogue feels quite simple. There isn’t much incentive to interact with NPCs beyond completing tasks.
World Design & Exploration in Everdream Village
Is Everdream Village Open World?
Yes, Everdream Village is fully open world, and the map is surprisingly large. Currently available areas include:
- Main Island
- Desert Island
Future updates are planned to add:
- A Tropical Island (first major content drop)
- An additional island at full release
While exploration is enjoyable at first, there’s currently little incentive to explore deeply. Resources like iron ore are scattered everywhere rather than tied to specific biomes, which makes exploration feel less purposeful.
Fast travel is also sorely needed. Running or sailing long distances quickly becomes tedious, especially as the map continues to grow.
Does Everdream Village Have Combat?
There is no combat in Everdream Village.
This will either be a huge positive or a dealbreaker, depending on your playstyle. For cozy gamers looking for a peaceful experience, it fits perfectly.
Everdream Village Gameplay Systems & Minigames
Crafting System
Crafting uses a hands-on, puzzle-style minigame where you assemble items piece by piece. It’s one of the most enjoyable systems in the game.
Helpful options include:
- Autocomplete after crafting an item once
- Paying a small fee to auto-solve immediately
This flexibility makes crafting accessible for all playstyles.
Farming System
Farming is very straightforward:
- Plant crops
- Water them
- Harvest when ready
There is no grid-based placement, and crops function as both produce and seeds. Growth timing is also unclear, resulting in staggered harvesting rather than a clean daily routine. I do think some improvements here would make the farming more enjoyable.
Fishing System
Fishing is slightly more involved than a basic button press and strikes a nice balance between relaxing and engaging. Currently, fish variety is limited, with only a few species found along one small part of the main island.
Critter Catching
Critter catching is extremely basic. You can catch insects like butterflies, but there’s no collection or museum system to give this mechanic long-term purpose.
Cooking System
Cooking features a minigame similar to crafting and works well mechanically. However, it currently feels optional, as meals have limited uses beyond gifting or selling to a merchant as there is no stamina to refill so cooking is not needed to replenish your character’s needs.
Wood Cutting System
Wood cutting includes a timing-based minigame, but it feels clunky with controller support. Clearer UI feedback and smoother controls would greatly improve this system.
Sailing
Sailing across the ocean is a very enjoyable mechanic in my opinion. It isn’t too cumbersome but gives just enough to make it feel interesting. I’m excited to see the boat upgrades they have planned for the future.
Again, my complaint here is it just takes a while to sail from one place to another and can get boring after a while. I would love to see fast travel integrated with this somehow in the future.

As you progress, you can:

- Receive help with farming, woodcutting, and animal care

By Day 5, I had already logged around 12.5 hours of gameplay.

- No shop schedules
While this allows for long play sessions, it also removes natural stopping points. Long-term replayability will depend heavily on how robust village customization and endgame systems become.
