Paralives Early Access Is Here (And It’s Already a Massive Hit)

The long-awaited indie life sim finally launched on May 25, 2026, and the numbers are staggering. Here’s everything you need to know about Paralives’ big debut, its surprise collabs, and the thriving mod community already taking off.

After seven years of development, countless Patreon updates, and a nail-biting delay last November, Paralives has officially arrived and the cozy gaming world (especially for the Life Sim fans) may never be the same.

The indie life simulation game from Montreal-based Paralives Studio dropped into Steam Early Access on May 25, 2026, and within its first eight hours, it had already sold 250,000 copies. By midday, it peaked at 78,603 concurrent players on Steam and claimed the #1 spot on Steam’s Top Sellers chart. These are extraordinary milestones for a passion project funded entirely through Patreon with no publisher backing and a team that never exceeded 15 people.

What Is Paralives?

For anyone new to the game… Paralives is a life simulation game often compared to The Sims. It was developed by Alex Massé and the Paralives Studio team. In it, you create characters called Parafolk (Paras for short), build homes in a grid-free open world, manage careers and relationships, and explore the Southern European-inspired town of Merino.

What sets it apart from The Sims goes beyond aesthetics. The character creator, called the Paramaker, lets you sculpt your Parafolk’s height, physique, and personality using tools that feel genuinely flexible. Build mode supports gridless construction, color wheels on everything, flexible wall placement, and object resizing. The open world includes shops, restaurants, a museum, parks, and workplaces to explore.

And then there’s the pricing. Developer Alex Massé has been clear from the beginning: there will never be any paid DLC. Every update through Early Access and beyond will be free. As Massé has said, “There are no shareholders or publishers to satisfy.” That alone has been a major draw for life sim fans burned by years of expensive expansion packs elsewhere.

Early Access is expected to run for approximately two years, with a major content update planned for Q4 2026 that will introduce weather and pets. Swimming pools, cars, and gardening are also on the roadmap.

The Launch Numbers Are Wild

To put the launch in perspective, Paralives sold 250,000 copies in just eight hours, peaked at over 78,000 concurrent players, and topped Steam’s seller charts all on a Memorial Day holiday in the US, which meant many players had a full free day to sink into character creation.

Steam reviews have settled at “Very Positive”, with roughly 86–88% positive ratings across thousands of reviews. The consistent praise is for the game’s bones, the building tools, the simulation depth, and the overall vision. The consistent negative heard in the reviews is it’s Early Access, and that shows. Bugs, performance hiccups, and a UI that still needs polish are the most common notes from players. The consensus seems to be that if you’re patient and excited about where this is going, it’s worth it now. If you want a polished experience, revisit in a year or two.

The Surprise Paralives Collabs (And They’re All Free)

One of the most delightful surprises of launch day was a string of free crossover collaborations with other indie games all included in the base game at no extra cost. These weren’t announced weeks in advance; they dropped right alongside the game itself, about 15 minutes after launch. Here’s a breakdown of each one:

🟥 Among Us x Paralives

The biggest and most recognizable collab. Among Us content includes:

  • A full Crewmate costume for your Parafolk, available in 12 color swatches and wearable from child to elder age
  • Plushies and figurines to decorate your home
  • A poster for your walls
  • Exclusive Stamps to collect via in-game mail
  • And the standout feature your Parafolk can actually sit down at a computer and play Among Us — complete with real gameplay footage appearing on screen

The Among Us content was included in the Day 0 patch, meaning it was available the moment the game launched.

🌲 Outbound x Paralives

Outbound, the cozy driving and exploration game from Square Glade Games that launched just weeks before Paralives, also joined the party. The collab includes:

  • The Otibondi Van, a decorative camper van you can place in build mode in two variants and six swatches (the base version without roof items is free)
  • Thanks to Paralives’ scaling system, the van can be resized from a cute miniature decoration to a full-sized vehicle
  • Your Parafolk can also play Outbound on their in-game computer, with actual gameplay appearing on screen

There’s also a Steam bundle available pairing both games together at a small discount.

⚔️ Kitfox Games x Paralives (Dwarf Fortress + Boyfriend Dungeon)

Montreal-based indie publisher Kitfox Games brought two of their titles into the collab in one package:

Dwarf Fortress, the legendary and deeply complex fortress-builder, and Boyfriend Dungeon, the weapon-dating dungeon crawler, both made it into Paralives as part of this crossover. The collab includes:

  • Body pillows featuring characters from Boyfriend Dungeon, including Sundar, Toshio, Valeria, and weapon-themed designs — some free, some premium, with sitting and lying variants
  • Your Parafolk can cuddle the body pillows if they’re feeling lonely
  • Both Dwarf Fortress and Boyfriend Dungeon are playable on in-game computers, alongside Among Us and Outbound
  • Exclusive Stamps to collect

A Steam bundle pairing Paralives with Dwarf Fortress is also available for launch week.

All four games represented in these collabs, Among Us, Outbound, Boyfriend Dungeon, and Dwarf Fortress, are playable via your Parafolk’s in-game computer, and watching them play actually shows real gameplay footage on screen. It’s a genuinely charming touch that feels like a love letter to the indie game community.

The Mod Community Is Already Exploding

Here’s where Paralives really diverges from older life sims, Steam Workshop support is built in from Day 1, and the modding toolkit ships inside the game itself. There’s no separate download required.

That means you don’t need to hunt through third-party websites, manually place files into folders, or worry about broken mod managers. Everything from mods, to custom lots, to pre-made households are shared and installed directly through Steam Workshop. Updates to mods happen automatically.

There are three main types of content in the Workshop:

  • Modpacks — new furniture, interactions, radio stations, gameplay tweaks, and more
  • Households — ready-made families and individual Parafolk you can drop into your game
  • Lots — fully built homes and community spaces

Within days of launch, the Workshop had already surpassed 600+ items, with mods ranging from cartoon-style censor replacements to expanded career options (including mental health-focused occupations), increased household size limits, and new job categories across tech, social media, and freelance fields. The scene is moving fast and growing by the hour.

If you want to browse, you can access the Workshop directly in-game via the “Mods” button in the main menu, or through the Steam Community Hub. You can filter by category, sort by popularity or rating, and subscribe with a single click.

Should You Play Paralives Right Now?

That depends on what kind of player you are.

If you love getting in early, being part of a community as it grows, and you have a tolerance for bugs and missing features then yes, absolutely. The foundation is genuinely impressive, and the No-Paid-DLC promise means every dollar you spend now keeps paying off as the game grows.

If you prefer a polished, complete experience, the developers themselves recommend waiting. Early Access is projected to last about two years, and the Q4 2026 update is expected to be the first major content push.

Either way, Paralives is clearly here to stay. With 250,000 copies sold in eight hours, a passionate community already creating mods and custom content, and an indie-first philosophy that resonates deeply with cozy game fans… this one has earned its moment.

Paralives is available now in Early Access on Steam for $39.99 (PC and Mac). A 10% launch discount is available through June 1, 2026.
